    About these signals

Six things we can work out from the numbers on file for the last 90 days, each set against a published reference range. A band is a comparison, not a grade: there is no score here, no fake-follower percentage. Audience demographics, when supplied, are shown separately. How the ranges were chosen.

📣 Nigerian writer @chimamanda_adichie on the danger of a single story:

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity.”

We are with you, Nepal ❤️‍🩹

Written in better days by photographer @michelleospino_ :

“Traversing the Upper Mustang region of Nepal, also known as The Forbidden Kingdom, which remained closed to outsiders until 1992.”

“Such a dream to experience this special corner of the world. Freezing mornings that gave way to sunny days, dal bhat on repeat, early morning prayers, wandering through the halls of the 700 year old royal palace, meeting the prince of Lo Manthang, experiencing a Buddhist festival, thousand year old caves, and taking in 360° views of some of the world’s most iconic mountain ranges. It was surreal.”

In some parts of Palestine, before a bride leaves her family home, the women of her community come together to make her a necklace of cloves, as part of a henna gathering: a pre-wedding celebration for the bride that weaves together making, music, and ceremony. Bearing these various blessings, the necklace becomes a keepsake woven with protection and the collective wish for a flourishing life.

This tradition forms the starting point for @mirna_bamieh new film, currently on view at @hangar_cia in Lisbon, which traces the politics of disappearance, of rituals, foods, and geographies.

Iranian photographer @mehrdadmosaferii lives in Bandar Abbas, a city on Iran’s southern coast, near the Strait of Hormuz. In his work he, among others, explores the relationship between geopolitical tensions and everyday life through long-term photographic projects.

A few of his words: “From childhood, the sea is never simply a landscape to look at; it is part of life. The scent of the sea in the air and the salt of the Persian Gulf on the lips are part of what it means to grow up in Bandar Abbas. Here, generations have grown up alongside these white waves, in a place where the sea has always been part of everyday life and the memory of people whose lives have remained connected to it.”

    Figures in a landscape 🖼️

“I don’t see how it is possible to get at the truth of a country without seeing its underside, its hinterland, its everyday life. Not bureaucrats in offices, but figures in the landscape, are actually the ideal.” - @paul.theroux
